20 Nov: received bulbs from Brent and Becky: Planted near heron 12/15

Red Aria – this lovely flower is registered as having orange petals and a red cup (2 O-R); its petals are ‘coppery’ and the cup is fiery red – no matter how you verbalize the colors, it is an eye-catcher; one of the later blooming red-cupped daffodils; a Grant Mitch hybrid; mid-late spring; 18″-24″.

N. Zaragoza 

– large, showy, upfacing flowers; strong, bright coloration of yellow and orange with lots of substance and long stems; 18″-22″; mid spring.  

N. Congress - ongress – a showy garden flower that was introduced in 1965; vibrant orange cup with golden yellow petals; Classic; 14″-18″; mid-late spring.

Tulips: in pots 16 Dec (May 2022: none bloomed--give up on tulips in pots!)

Caribbean Parrot 

Caribbean Parrot – looks like a luscious flower that is grown in the tropics; very variable and its color changes intensity as it matures; amazing substance and strong stemmed, this is a real winner; 14″-18″; mid-late spring; 11/+ cm.
Avignon Parrot 

Avignon Parrot – rich blend of warm, happy orange tones draw much attention; strong stems; amazing in arrangements; 16″-20″; mid- late spring.
Flaming Parrot 

Flaming Parrot – primrose yellow to creamy white with blood red flames inside, often maturing to creamy white with crimson flames outside; strong stems and a flower arranger’s dream; 20″-24″; mid-late spring.
Parrot Negrita 

Parrot Negrita – a popular triumph tulip now in parrot form; deep reddish-purple with green brush marks on thick wavy petals, opens slightly earlier than other parrot varieties; 18″-20″; mid- late spring.

In Deltaville the A. Konjac bloomed for my birthday but I only saw a late budding stage.  Three of the four peonies bloomed, not the one to right of front steps.  Planted tomatoes and Poblano peppers but by Mem Day they had been rabbitized, according to Sue.  Strawberry cactus had two blooms!   

May 15 or so.  The Canna lilies in the ceramic pot at the end of the driveway were emerging.  I planted four caladiums (Summer Breeze I think) in an apparently empty spot in the pot.  Other caladiums went into pots with Cannas; planted Oxalis in with last year's begonias, which sprouted in garage but wilted in summer sun.  Also with the Cannas I planted a red-purple Salvia and a Sunset colored one and Peruvian verbena to dangle 

The bigger Syandrospadix put up a long slender leaf and a flower.  The smaller one has split in two and was repotted; it shows a green sprout.

Retreived the A. bulbifer in a green pot; it is beginning to come up.

Spring Plantings 2021

I just planted Edgeworthia chrysantha near the entrance steps to Deltaville. PD only had some barely rooted cuttings; I hope this one takes. Not working May 2022. https://www.plantdelights.com/blogs/articles/edgeworthia-chrysantha  

I also planted jasmine in the Canna planter on the deck.  This superb form of the Chinese scrambler, Jasminum officinale, comes from Fromefield Nursery in the UK. Unlike the species that has green leaves, this seedling boasts brilliant gold foliage that holds beautifully even in our hot, humid summers. The stems are home to deliciously fragrant, pure white flowers throughout the summer. As a gesture of forced integration, we encourage Jasminum 'Frojas' to scramble through other colored foliage plants such as purple loropetalum and smoke tree. Each branch of Fiona Sunrise jasmine can reach up to 10' in length when happy or can be kept shorter with a pair of sharp clippers. Lest we forget, tea from this gem is drunk for its aphrodisiac qualities, and who could forget that carrying the flowers attracts money and wealth? Attract a little bit our way, if you please. Note 6/12/22: Grew a lot in planter on deck, no blooms; tried to overwinter without success.

Fall Plantings 2020

 No daffodils this year.  There are four tulips and a bonus Lily from Brent and Becky's.  Tulips are:

Foxtrot Potted up for porch bloom.  Tulip Foxtrot is a double, early spring blooming tulip bulb that has several different shades of rose color that will blend with many other bulbs and perennials in your garden. Like all tulipa, tulip bulbs are from the Liliaceae family. Tulip Foxtrot is excellent for forcing and has flowers that are long lasting. This fall planted tulip bulb requires full sun and average soil. Tulip Foxtrot blooms 10"-12" tall and is good for winter hardiness zones 3-8.  Potted on the screened porch this performed very well April 2021.

 

Virichic 

Virichic - bright and bold, this tulip with lily-shaped petals, the exciting coloration of a typical viridiflora tulip, and great substance make it a real winner and 'very chic'! 12"-16".

End of Spring Plantings

Last weekend, the Canna lilies in the ceramic pot at the end of the driveway were emerging.  I planted four caladiums (Summer Breeze I think) in an apparently empty spot in the pot.  Added two new African daisiesfrom E&T  to the planter which hosted four from last year, beginning to look alive after a winter inside.  Four red annual dahlias were planted at the foot of the heron statue by the front door.  I planted eight of the Iron Cross oxalis from Brent and Becky in the cement urn which has catmint in it.  The urn really needs to have its soil refreshed next spring or in the autumn.

I added three lantana this weekend to the heron garden--one yellow, one orange and one pink/red combo.  I also planted two of the Iron cross oxalis Brent and Becky had sent as a freebie in the front.   In a semicircle around the heron behind and to its sided I planted Apple Blossom caladium, which I think will show better than the dull red Burning Heart caladiums I put there last year.

In the hanging basket with the Begonia bolviensis the new caladiums Candidum Sr are beginning to come up.

The potted Laosy Colocasia has four leaves now, one beginning to fade.  Junior still only two.

November 21 assessment:  Laosy at Darby's.  Not looking great...

Cannas all moved to garage for winter.  Dahlias has occasional blooms, not real successful.  Iron cross oxalis were great but deer ate them quickly.  The Begonia bloomed for a while but lookedsad most of the time.  Put its hanging basket pot in garage on jetski.  Lantana still green today.  Apple blossom did work well, but now caput.
